Meant to Be Maddie
A feature documentary filmed over ten years following a North Carolina family as they navigate supporting their transgender daughter, Maddie.
Beginning in 2016, when Maddie is eight years old, the film covers a tumultuous decade in the U.S. for the transgender community, marked by positive growth and support as well as extreme backlash. In 2023, almost 600 anti-trans bills have been introduced, the highest amount ever recorded.
Meant to Be Maddie is fiscally sponsored by the Southern Documentary Fund. You can check out our project page there and make a donation to fund our ongoing production and post-production.

We are in production through 2025, when Maddie will finish high school.
